Reimagine a former Craftsman home with a layered past—first a residence, then a photography studio and bike shop—all connected by the presence of locally known artist G. Oscar. The building held a familiar place in Tulsa’s collective memory, and preserving it offered an opportunity to restore its role as a place for gathering rather than lose it to demolition and redevelopment.

Preserve the character of G. Oscar and the building itself while adapting a collection of intimate, unconventional spaces to meet the code and functional requirements of a commercial gathering place.

Working closely with building owner and contractor Micky Payne, decades of artwork, photography, sculpture, found objects, and collected artifacts were carefully removed and catalogued before construction began. The collection was then thoughtfully reintroduced throughout the building. Rather than erase its layered history, the design kept much of the existing spatial character intact, making targeted interventions only where needed for accessibility, life safety, and commercial use.

A treasured Tulsa space begins a new chapter without losing the character that made it meaningful. G. Oscar’s presence remains woven throughout a series of intimate rooms, where art, objects, and traces of the building’s past create an experience unlike a conventional coffee shop. Layers of time reveal themselves around every corner, creating a place that feels familiar to longtime visitors while welcoming a new generation into the story.
